Please Note

Orion has made the difficult decision to close our warehouse facility in the Netherlands. With the continuing supply chain/logistics challenges and slowness in the economy we have found that it is not economically feasible to maintain operations in the UK and Europe.

We have therefore stopped taking orders on this website. We apologize for any inconvenience.

We will continue to have Orion dealers in Europe to meet the needs of Orion consumers. We will also continue to honor the 30-Day product return period as well as honoring the Orion warranty for purchases made in the UK and Europe.

Our US-based Customer Service Representatives are here to help. Contact them via email at support@telescope.com or in the United Kingdom, via phone at 0-800-041-8146 (Monday-Friday between the hours of 1300 and 2400 GMT).

Orion Full-Aperture Glass Telescope Solar Filters
  • Optical glass white light solar filters fit snugly over your telescope's aperture to block 99.999% of incoming sunlight so you can safely observe the sun and sunspots without damaging your eyes or telescope
  • Glass telescope filter elements are machine-polished and triple-coated with nickel-chromium stainless steel, and mounted in a robust aluminum cell with foam tape liner
  • Each solar filter features three equidistant thumbscrews and includes 4x 1/16" thick adhesive foam tabs, and 4x 1/8" thick adhesive foam tabs so you can customize a friction fit to your telescope
  • Each solar filter fits telescope tube outer diameters up to 0.25" smaller than specified Inside Diameter (ID) size
  • Note: All Orion solar filters are designed for use with an adequate friction fit attachment. Thumbscrews should ONLY be used to keep filter securely in place once a friction fit has been achieved - NEVER view the sun without a properly friction-fitted solar filter

Who said you have to be in the dark to enjoy astronomy? Turning your telescope to the Sun is fun and educational. Watch the march of giant sunspots, the clouds of glowing vapor in the photosphere, and solar "granulation" detail. But be sure to protect your precious vision with a safe Orion Full Aperture glass Solar Filter! Looking at the Sun without one, even for an instant, can permanently damage your eyes.

These full-aperture optical glass telescope filters deliver superb, white-light views of the Sun, without risk to your eyes. While more expensive than film filters, Orion glass solar filters provide better contrast, a more pleasing and natural yellow-orange color, and are more durable. They are ideal to use for capturing telescopic astrophotos of the Sun too.

The glass filter elements are machine-polished and triple-coated with an advanced nickel-chromium stainless steel alloy for a scratch-resistant surface. The filter passes only a fraction of the incoming light, rejecting harmful ultraviolet and infrared radiation.

Each filter is mounted in an aluminum cell that slide-fits over the front of your telescope. Three nylon thumbscrews can be tightened to ensure a safe, snug fit to the front of your telescope. The thumbscrews complement the press-fit foam lining inside the durable aluminum filter cell. A tight friction-fit is still required for safe solar viewing through a telescope. Each filter fits telescope tube diameters up to 1/4" smaller than the specified size.

*WARNING! When using a truss tube Dobsonian telescope for solar observing, always use a Light Shroud and a properly sized solar filter. When you install the Light Shroud make certain there are no gaps between the Shroud and the telescope where direct sunlight can reach the telescope mirror. When a truss tube telescope (equipped with a solar filter but no Light Shroud) is pointing near (not at) the Sun, direct sunlight can hit the mirror and focus on the solar filter or other portions of the telescope. This can lead to eye injury or damage to the telescope. Using a Light Shroud protects your telescope from peripheral sunlight.

Before using any telescope for solar observing, make sure to install all dustcaps or other protective covers on all optical components such as finder scopes to keep sunlight from passing through them. Glancing through an uncovered optical system, even for an instant, can cause permanent eye damage. Always install protective caps on all optical instruments if left out during daylight hours.
